Carl Daikeler-Why Bother?

July 15, 2011 –

First off, I want to take this opportunity to thank my wife for agreeing to make me her lifelong partner in this journey we call life 11 years ago today. There we are in the picture on July 15, 2000. I love you sweetie.

Today, I am posting the first part of Carl Daikeler’s Speech from the opening day of Summit. (For more on that day, see HERE.) I am breaking this into 2 posts. For the first part of the post, I want to focus on his introductory speech. I think one of the more powerful moments was when he took the stance of “Why Bother?”. Here is what he had to say.

“Maybe the world isnt interested in what we are doing? Why bother? Why is it wrong to enjoy what modern society can provide? Is it really wrong to eat fast food? Is it really that bad to celebrate all the events in our lives with candy and cake and beer and fried foods? Why not just enjoy life? Are we such a vain culutre that we are going to obsess about being thin and pressure our kids be thin, lean, and fit? Why can’t we just let kids be kids? Why obsess about this?”

He answered himself with some important stats.

– The typical revolving door has had to be widened from 10 ft to 12 ft to accomodate our obesity.

– An obese couple will waste $7,500 per year on obesity-related cost. That means to live the same lifestyle, they have to be spend $7,500 more a year to be obese.

– Our kids are expected to have a shorter lifespan than our own! And because of this lifestyle, our kids will suffer more diabetes, more heart disease, and will die younger than we will.

I encourage you to listen to his full speech below.
