Dreams

August 20, 2011 –

What is a dream to you? Is it a hope that things will be better? Is it a place you want to be at some point in the future? Are you living your dream now?

Actress Josie Bisset remarked, “Dreams come a size too big so we can grow into them.”. John C. Maxwell says “A dream is an inspiring picture of the future that energizes your mind, will and emotions, empowering you to do everything you can to achieve it.” I believe dreams are one of the most powerful things in the world. It is our dreams that propel us, motivate us, and move us forward.

I believe a person without a dream is like living a life with hope. Without dreams, we sit stagnant and collect dust. I know many people that create dream boards. They put pictures, words, or whatever to remind them of what they are driving towards.

John C. Maxwell has a great step by step process for those who aren’t sure what their dream is. Or perhaps you know, but don’t know how to move forward.

  1. Mental preparation. Read and study in areas of your greatest interest.
  2. Experiential preparation. Engage in activities in areas related to your interests.
  3. Visual preparation. Put up pictures of people and things that inspire you.
  4. Hero preparation. Read about and try to meet people you admire and who inspire you.
  5. Physical preparation. Get your body in optimal shape to pursue your dream.
  6. Spiritual preparation. Seek God’s help for a bigger-than-self dream.

So what is your dream? Or do you have numerous dreams? Have you ever written it down? Have you ever verbalized it? Are you too embarrassed to tell someone about it? Stand with conviction! This is YOUR dream. Dont live someone else’s dream. Live YOUR dream. be proud of your dream…no matter how big or how small.

As we know, there are MANY things that get in the way of our dreams. And when this happens, I return to my roots of motivation. One of the main things that keeps me driving towards my dreams is music. For all of my life, music has been a fundamental source of strength and motivation for me. I played trumpet through high school (yup, band geek), taught myself guitar in college, and dabble on the piano. One of the songs that I turn to when I need that extra push is “Dreams” by Van Halen. I am not exaggerating when I say I have probably listened to this song a thousand times. It brings out the best in me and always leaves me PUMPED UP! The video below was done to the background of a Blue Angels show which is pretty awesome. The fact that the YouTube clip was taken from “VH1 Classic” makes me feel a little old though. :)

Keep your dream alive! They are the genesis and catalyst that make you living a life of significance!

UPDATE – 08/15/12 – Updated You Tube Clip as the previous one was taken down.

Dreams

By: Van Halen

World turns black and white
Pictures in an empty room
Your love starts fallin’ down
Better change your tune
Yeah, you reach for the golden ring
Reach for the sky
Baby, just spread your wings

We’ll get higher and higher
Straight up we’ll climb
We’ll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

Run, run, run away
Like a train runnin’ off the track
Got the truth bein’ left behind
Falls between the cracks
Standin’ on broken dreams
Never losin’ sight, ah
Well just spread your wings

We’ll get higher and higher
Straight up we’ll climb
We’ll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you’ve cried
Oh, that’s what dreams are made of
‘Cause we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that’s what dreams are made of

Yeah, we’ll get higher and higher
Straight up we’ll climb
Higher and higher
Leave it all behind
Oh, we’ll get higher and higher
Who knows what we’ll find?

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you’ve cried
Oh, that’s what dreams are made of
Oh baby, we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that’s what dreams are made of

And in the end on dreams we will depend
‘Cause that’s what love is made of
