Coenzyme Q10

May 16, 2011 –

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was unknown to me before I read Tony Horton’s book, “Bring It!”.  In some surveys, CoQ10 is the third most used supplement. So lets have a primer on CoQ10 and what it can do for you.

What is CoQ10 and where can it found naturally?

CoQ10 occurs naturally in the body and is found in every cell of your body. It is used to produce energy your body needs for cell growth and maintenance.

CoQ10 is naturally present in small amounts in a wide variety of foods, but levels are particularly high in organ meats such as heart, liver, and kidney, as well as beef, soy oil, sardines, mackerel, and peanuts.

What are the benefits of CoQ10?

– It functions as an antioxidant, which protects the body from damage caused by harmful molecules.

– Strengthens the Heart Muscle

– Decreases High Blood Pressure

– Reduces Angina (Chest Pain from Clogged Heart Arteries)

– Has Anti-aging effects, such as helping with macular degeneration

– Increases Tissue Oxygenation

– Aids Circulation

– Reverses Gum Deterioration

– Enhances Immunity

– Boost energy and speed recovery from exercise

Is it safe?

There are few serious reported side effects of CoQ10. Side effects are typically mild and brief, stopping without any treatment needed. Taking 100 mg a day or more of CoQ10 has caused mild insomnia in some people.

Should I supplement? What dosage?

Effective dosages range from 30 – 200mg daily with food that contains fat. Gel Capsules are more potent. Personally, I have been taking 100mg per day since the beginning of the year. I bought the GNC brand and it was relatively inexpensive as I got a Buy One, Get One Half Off. It worked out to ~$0.20 per softgel.

I have not noticed any adverse side effects. However, whether CoQ10 is right for you can only truly be answered by you and your doctor. There is a wealth of information on the web that you can also tap into, but remember everyone’s situation is unique.
