Food Revolution – Episode 2 (Season 1)

July 21, 2011 –

I have really enjoyed Jamie Oliver’s Revolution and decided to write a review on each of the episodes. If you haven’t read my Episode 1 review, click HERE.

In Episode 2, I started to get angry at this community. Not only did they misquote him and use it against him, but the town continues to just hate his overall presence. Some of my favorite moments.

1) I love the experiment he showcases for the kids.  He really wants to show kids were food comes from and what they are eating. So he says this experiment never fails! He takes all the good parts of a whole chicken and puts them aside. Then, he proceeds to chop up the remaining carcass into bits and pieces (yup, the whole carcass) including excess skin and blends it into disgusting pink mush. The kids are grossed out. So far so good. He then flattens it out, cuts it out in a nugget, throws breading on it, and puts it in a frying pan. He then asks who now wants to eat it. EVERYONE raises their hand!! He looks a the camera in disbelief.

2) Continuing on his quest to teach kids where food comes from he goes into a classroom and shows them basic foods (tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower, beets, and eggplant). Not one kid knows what any of it is! Not one! Now, I give kudos to the teacher because he comes back later and she has taught them all the foods.

3) We continue to follow the family from Episode 1 and Justin (the oldest) is tested for diabetes. Luckily, he does not have it yet, but he will soon. The parents are very moved and realize they must change. One of the greatest moments for me was the one-on-one cooking session Jamie has with Justin. He is a great kid and I look forward to seeing him grow throughout this show.

4) Forks and Knives! – Jamie has an argument with the lunch ladies on needing a fork and knife to eat the food. They want PROOF that in the UK kids are allowed to use forks and knives in school. Jamie says, “I think I’m about to cry.”

5) When Jamie’s healthy and whole food meal goes against the standard school pizza, he loses. He loses BIG! It cracks me up that his meal does NOT pass USDA regulation because he needs 2 breads. He only has brown rice so he is forced to put hamburger buns out as well.

6) Jamie has his first victory at the end of this episode. He shows the kids and parents what is going in their kid’s bodies. Buckets of Flavored Milk (hello sugar!), French Fries, Sloppy Joes, and Nachos. And if that isn’t enough, he dumps (literally) a dump truck load of fat to show how much fat is being consumed by the kids in one year. Finally, the parents are getting it. Now, we will see where this goes in Episode 3 and if Jamie keeps the momentum.
