Casein Protein

September 14, 2011 –

I have a series of blogs I wrote earlier in the year on supplements. You can see links to all those posts, HERE. It includes Whey Protein. Multivitamins, Recovery Drink, Shakeology, Shakeology Fiber. CoQ10, Ginkgo Biloba, Core Omega 3, etc.

There are (2) new supplements that I have tried since then. I will cover the first today: Casein Protein

What is Casein Protein? What are it’s benefits?

Casein Protein makes up 80% of the protein in cow’s milk and between 60% and 65% of the proteins in human milk. The major difference between Whey and Casein is how fast the amino acids are released into the blood stream. Whey Protein is very quickly released whereas Casein is released over many hours. It is for this reason that I, along with most others take Casein, do it before bedtime.

Casein Protein actually forms a clot or gel in the stomach which provides the sustained slow release of amino acids in the blood stream. This provides a steadier supply of muscle fuel, crucial to maintaining a anti-catabolic state and signifcantly decreases protein breakdown.

How Much and When do I take it?

I have been taking the GNC brand for the past 3 months or so. I take 1 scoop which is 25g. I take this after dinner, typically around 8:30 – 9:00 pm. I typically put 8oz of unsweetened almond milk  along with a frozen banana. It is a thicker consistency than Whey and the taste is slightly different as well.

My Important Conclusion

As I continue my journey, I find that education has been the cornerstone of progressing my health. I initially had tried Casein because I had been having a Whey Protein shake every night. Since I was having a protein shake at night, it seemed sensible to make it Casein.

Over the past 2 months,  I have been doing more and more research on nutrition by reading books and watching eye-opening movies like Forks Over Knives. The movie references a book called “The China Study”. I have bought this book and is next on my pile by my bedisde. The eye-opening research that came out of “The China Study” was a direct correlation between Casein administered to rats and the promotion of cancer cell growth when exposed to carcinogens. One group of rats was put on a 5% protein diet and another group on a 20% protein diet. Regardless of the amount of aflatoxin (a potent carcinogen) administered to these rats, none of the rats on 5% protein developed foci, precursors to cancerous cell growth, and every rat on 20% protein developed the pre-cancer foci. Other studies conducted by Dr. Campbell on humans confirmed this correlation between the amount of protein consumed and the promotion of cancerous cell growth. Basically, he discovered that cancer growth could be turned on and off by adjusting the amount of animal protein in the diet. *

After this research, I have decided to STOP taking Casein Protein. It has been my personal decision and hence is not something I would personally recommend. If you have been following up with my posts, the more I read, all signs keep pointing to a whole foods plant-based diet. I am currently researching alternate plant-based protein sources.

I just ordered Sun Warrior Vegan Protein. I will definitely have a post on how that works for me. I am not making any judgments Jon, but one thing I have always promised the team is be open and honest with my continued journey.

Thank you coach for the quick response, I will look into that protein powder as well. I also appreciate your honest opinion about the casein, I had no idea about the china study. My wife and I just started insanity today and I think my legs are going to fall off. Thanks for all the great information on your site.
